1976 BALSEIRO HOUSE

Texts

The building had to resolve a dual condition; its first two floors, in which the owner’s home was to be located, should look onto the yard, while the two upper floors, traditional apartments to be sold, should be blind to that same garden view.

As the site greatly slopes to the west, the basement was conveniently able to emerge at the same level as the garden, and in continuity with it.  The double height space, onto which the secondary rooms open, is the main focus of the spatial tension and looks to the garden through large windows.  This play is contained within a singular, white, excavated volume, a parallelogram in three dimensions with the chimney in counterpoint.
